Post - Stroke Care:

At Jovimed we strive to provide the patients with a comprehensive post-stroke therapy.
Stroke rehabilitation requires a coordinated effort from professional staff as well as the patient.
Patients may arrive at Jovimed following one of the following two types of stroke

  • Ischemic stroke – when a blood vessel in the brain form blockage or clot.
  • Hemorrhagic stroke- an artery in the brain breaks open.

A stroke survivor may suffer from various disabilities:

Paralysis

The most common disability paralysis affects the arm, leg and face movement on the side of the body opposite the side of the brain damaged. Consequently, Stroke patients may have difficulty time walking or grabbing objects. Other patients, depending on the area of the brain damage may experience problem swallowing, movement coordination, and balance.

Paralysis care at Jovimed

Depending on the condition of the patient and following the instructions of the doctor our rehabilitation therapist will apply

  • A passive and active range of motion therapy (ROM)
  • Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT)
  • Post-stroke mobility training for those who need to gain balance while walking.
  • Motor skills strengthening exercises to enhance the muscles strength and coordination.

Apart from working individually with the physical therapist, the patient would be encouraged to use the aerobic exercise available in our center, as well as group activities focusing on repetitive tasks.

Swallowing Problems (dysphagia)

Stroke may impair your ability to use the muscles in your mouth and throat to the point that the patient is not able to swallow.
In some cases, tube feeding (PEG) may be necessary.

Dysphagia care at Jovimed

our nurse on duty would care for the patient in case tube feeding is necessary (families would be charged separately for feeding formula)
When patients arrive at Jovimed the family should instruct the nurse and the center manager of swallowing problems.
We would make sure all food served to the patient would be in a form of thick liquids.
If necessary, we will assign a caregiver to help the patient during eating.

Incontinence Problem

Stroke often cause sensory deficits. As such it is fairly common for patients to lose the ability the sense the ability to urinate. Until such time that the patient regains sensory capacity, the usage of pampers may be needed.

Incontinence care at Jovimed

Incontinence problems are part of the routine work at Jovimed. caregivers will properly attend to the patients. Families may be required to provide the pampers. Alternatively, our center may include the pampers supply as part of the package.

Speech Difficulties (Aphasia)

Around of the patients suffering from a stroke will experience language impairments. This condition known as Aphasia is due to the damage in the language control center located on the left side of the brain.

Depending on the severity and the location of the brain damage, the patient may not be able to say or write a word he has in mind, in other cases the patient is not speaking coherently and in extreme cases patient may not be able to understand the language.

Jovimed approach to Aphasia

Apart from a speech therapist, it is strongly recommended to facilitate social interaction during patient rehabilitation. At Jovimed we run daily program and activities allowing social interaction with the patient. some of the physical activities are also carried ours in a group.

If the family wishes to engage individual speech therapist, we at Jovimed will help in finding the right person and allocate the proper set up for the individual sessions.

Emotional Disturbance and Cognitive Decline

The decline of the cognitive skills often caused by the stroke is the cause for frustration, anger, and depression. In some cases, the stock itself is the cause for the clinical emotional problem. Often, patients need to be administered medication to deal with the depressive state.

Jovimed approach to emotional disturbance and cognitive decline

We urge the family to consult with the psychologist and psychiatrist when depression appears to be the issue.

apart from the professional medical care, we regularly offer recreational and social activities which are highly important for the patient well being.

Our recreational activities for the week is posted on the center’s board at the beginning of each week.  Provided it does not come in conflict with his rehabilitation program, the patient is welcomed to participate in these program without any limit.

Patients and Medication

Medication is an important part of the stroke survivor patient. Blood pressure medication, anti-clotting drugs, antidepressant, heart rate drugs and anti-cholesterol drugs are only part of the list that may be prescribed to the patient.

Many of the post-stroke surviving patients may be too confused to properly follow the instructions of the doctor when it comes to taking their medication.

The medical staff at Jovimed will properly control and administer the prescribed medication on a regular and timely manner.
